Synopsis[]
Two young men wake up in an unfamiliar forest. They don't remember anything before this except their names. Lloyd and Asbel soon hear the cries of a frantic child nearby! They go to save the troubled child and are soon greeted by a curious green sprite. It seems they've been transported to Revalia, a dream world. They agree to help Terun, the small green sprite, who calls them "awakened dreamers," purify the so called Vuul and meet Natalia and Rubia along the way. What awaits them in Revalia?
- Despite the "Prologue" text in the announcement, this is the main event.

Sleep People sleep... at the end of each day. People sleep... secure in the belief... that it will bring them comfort. But what if, instead... it took them to another world? A world that mirrors our own... | |
??? | ... ...me... Somebody, help me! |
Asbel | Huh? Wh-Where am I? What am I doing here...? |
Lloyd | Mmmmm... |
Asbel | Oh! |
Lloyd | Huh...? What is this place? |
Asbel | Are you okay? |
Lloyd | I... I think so. Sorry, I'm... a little disoriented. Can you tell me where I am? |
Asbel | To be honest... I'm not entirely sure myself. When I came to, I was here, but... |
Lloyd | You too, huh? What the heck is going on...? Well, can you remember what you were doing before you were here? |
Asbel | I... I can't. What is wrong with me? Why can't I remember? |
Lloyd | Wait... I do remember one thing. I know my name. It's Lloyd... Lloyd Irving. What's yours? |
Asbel | I remember mine too! Asbel Lhant. Do you think we know each other? |
Lloyd | I wonder. But I guess those sorts of questions can wait. We should take a look around. I don't think sitting here and picking our brains is gonna bring our memories back. At least we managed to remember our names. The rest ought to follow. |
Asbel | You might be right about that, but... Huh? |
Lloyd | What is it? |
Asbel | I think I heard something. |
Lloyd | Really? I didn't catch anything. |
??? | Help... me... |
Asbel | I'm sure I heard it this time. That way! |
??? | H-Help me! Somebody! Please! |
Lloyd | There! |
Asbel | He's being attacked by monsters! We gotta save him! |
Lloyd | Right! |

Lloyd | Are you okay? |
??? | *pant* *pant* Th-Thank you... |
Asbel | You don't seem to be hurt. I'm Asbel. That's Lloyd. |
Lloyd | Who are you? |
Terun | Oh! Right! Well, uh, my name is Terun. Terun of the Rufres. That's the name of my kind, I mean. The Rufres. Anyway, I've been looking everywhere for you! |
Asbel | For us? |
Terun | Of course! You're awakened dreamers, right? |
Asbel | Awakened... |
Lloyd | ...dreamers? |
Terun | Uh... You mean... you aren't? |
Asbel | I don't even know what you're talking about! |
Lloyd | Yeah. |
Terun | But... But you do have human forms! |
Asbel | Look, we don't know what's going on here, and we don't remember anything outside of our names. |
Terun | What?! |
Lloyd | I wasn't even sure if I knew how to use this sword! Luckily when I tried, it turned out that I did. |
Asbel | The last thing we both remember was coming to in these woods. We don't have a clue where we are, so if you do, how about you fill us in? |
Terun | You... don't remember... How can that be? Did we mess up the ritual...? Or... are the Vuul responsible? |
Asbel | Terun? |
Terun | Huh? Oh! R-Right. I'm sorry! So, um... This is Revalia. Basically, it's a dream world. |
Lloyd | A dream world? What would those monsters we just fought be doing in a dream world? |
Terun | Ah, right. It's not a dream world in that sense. It's... a place you go when you sleep. |
Asbel | ... |
Terun | Um... Let's see... |
Lloyd | ... |
Terun | How about we go talk this over somewhere that's more safe? The Rufres village isn't far from here. We can talk there! |
Asbel | I guess we do run the risk of being attacked again if we keep hanging out here... |
Terun | It's just this way! |
Lloyd | He's an awfully fidgety little fellow. What do you think, Asbel? |
Asbel | I'm not sure. So this is all a dream? Is that why we don't have any memories? |
Lloyd | Maybe if we follow him to his village, we could ask him that. |
Asbel | Yeah. I guess we should. |

Lloyd | Is that your village? |
Terun | Yes, that's the home of the Rufres. We're almost there. I know it looks small from here, but it's really quite large. |
Asbel | Hey, Terun? |
Terun | Y-Y-Yes? What is it, sir? |
Asbel | Just call me Asbel. Listen, I'm still having trouble believing this is all a dream. I know you wanted to talk at your village, but could you at least fill us in a little as we walk? |
Terun | S-Sure... Okay. I can do that. So, right now, Revalia is actually— |
Asbel | —! Terun! Look out! |
Terun | Wh-Whaaa?! |
Lloyd | Asbel! Asbel! Are you all right? |
Asbel | An ambush... I shoulda been... more careful. |
Lloyd | Uh-oh. There's a lot of them. |
Asbel | I think... I've been poisoned...! |
Terun | Oh... Oh no... |
Lloyd | Terun, get back! |
Terun | B-B-B-But... |
Asbel | Get back! We'll handle this! |
Terun | Y-Yessir! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! |
Asbel | What the... Are they targeting Terun?! |
Terun | Bwaah! |
Lloyd | Archers? Where?! |
Natalia | I'm on your side. |
Asbel | Who the heck...? |
Natalia | We'll talk later. We need to do something about these monsters first. You there, have you been poisoned? Let me remedy that for you. |
Lloyd | So we're not the only people here? I don't know what's going on, but I'm grateful for the help. |
Natalia | Cleanse the defiled! Recover! |
Asbel | The poison's gone...! Thanks! I owe you one. |
Natalia | You owe me nothing. We all have a duty to aid those in need. |
Asbel | So you're able to remember things? Like artes, and where you're from? |
Natalia | Ah. Then we're all in the same boat. To be honest, I'm only able— |
Lloyd | You two! Save the chit-chat for later! |
Natalia | He's right. We have to do something about these monsters first. |
Asbel | Right. Let's clear 'em out! |

Natalia | Well, those were tall odds, but it looks like we pulled it off. |
Asbel | Thanks. You really saved us there. |
Lloyd | Yeah. We never could have won that battle with swords alone. |
Natalia | It was my pleasure. My bow arm was humming with excitement at having finally found someone else! I'm Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear. You can just call me Natalia. |
Lloyd | Nice to meetcha. I'm Lloyd. |
Asbel | Asbel Lhant. It's a pleasure. |
Natalia | And you're both suffering from amnesia as well? |
Asbel | Yeah. We both came to in the woods over there, and couldn't remember much beyond our names. |
Natalia | I've been out here for a while, and it's been nothing but monsters. Where in the world are we? |
Lloyd | Apparently this is some sort of dream world. They call it Revalia. |
Natalia | A dream world? |
Lloyd | Yeah. And we're... What did he call us? |
Asbel | "Awakened dreamers." |
Lloyd | Yeah. That was it. |
Natalia | What does that even mean? How do you know these things? |
Lloyd | Oh, right! What happened to Terun? Terun! |
Terun | Um, yes... Over here. |
Natalia | Ah, you're the one the monsters were after. Terun, is it? I'm Natalia. |
Terun | I'm... Uh... Terun. Oh, but you... You already... Right. It's, uh... It's a pleasure. |
Asbel | You're okay? The monsters didn't hurt you? |
Terun | I knew these woods were dangerous, but I... I never imagined I could be attacked so close to the village... We should go there right away. |
Lloyd | So those were what, monsters? Man, there are monsters everywhere these days. Even in dreams! |
Terun | Those... were not monsters. They're the Vuul. |
Lloyd | The... Vuul? What do you mean "Vuul"? How were those not just monsters? |
Terun | ... |
Lloyd | Come on, Terun! We need answers here! |
Natalia | He's trembling! Leave him alone. |
Lloyd | Oh... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you, Terun. |
Terun | ... |
Asbel | That's his village over there. Maybe if we bring him home he'll be able to calm down and talk with us. |
Lloyd | All right. We should get moving before more monsters—or Vuul, or whatever— find us. |
Natalia | Agreed. |

Lloyd | Terun wasn't kidding, this village is a lot bigger than it looked! What's that looming over it? |
Natalia | That is quite a tall... building, I guess? Some part of this village? |
Terun | Y-Yes... That's... |
Asbel | Everyone, quiet. I hear something... |
Lloyd | What is it, Asbel? |
Natalia | You're right, I hear it too... It sounds like a battle! |
Terun | Wh-What...?! Fighting? Here in the village? |
Asbel | Hold it together, Terun. |
Terun | B-But... the village... |
Lloyd | Look, over there! More of Terun's people, and... |
Natalia | And a person! It looks like he's... trying to protect Terun's friends? |
Asbel | By himself? There's no way! |
Lloyd | We'd better go help him! Terun, find a place to hide! |
Terun | Y-Yessir! |
Flynn | Everyone, flee to the center of the village! Damn it... I can't hold them! |
Asbel | Stay strong! We're coming! |
Flynn | Who...?! Well, whoever you are, thank you! |
Asbel | That one looks dangerous! The others shouldn't be a problem. |
Flynn | Watch out for that big Vuul! He hits hard! |
Natalia | Let's pick off the others first. Then we can focus on the big one. |
Asbel | Gotcha! |
Lloyd | Right! |

Asbel | Was that the last of them? |
Flynn | Yeah. The village should be safe now. Thank you for coming to help. I couldn't have held out against them alone. |
Asbel | We certainly weren't gonna leave you to fight them all by yourself! You don't need to thank us. |
Flynn | All the same, I'm grateful. I'm Flynn. Flynn Scifo. |
Lloyd | Name's Lloyd Irving. Nice to meetcha. |
Natalia | Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear. Just Natalia is fine. |
Asbel | Asbel Lhant. Do you understand what's going on here, Flynn? |
Flynn | No. I'd just managed to find my way to this village and start asking questions when we were attacked. |
Terun | Thank you. Thank you for saving our village. Thank you so much! |
Asbel | You're welcome, but I think it's time you started giving us some answers. What is going on here? |
Terun | Yes, of course. I will explain. As I told you earlier, this is a dream world, known as Revalia. To put it simply, this is a dream that you are all experiencing together. Revalia is the place that all people from the waking world visit when they dream! |
Flynn | So there's a waking world, and... this Revalia... |
Lloyd | Then why are there so many monsters in our dreams? Sorry, I mean... Vuul. |
Terun | Our teachings say that Vuul are born from the pain and sorrows possessed by dreamers. As the Vuul increase, Revalia becomes a darker place, which then begins to affect all dreamers. Revalia and the waking world are linked like that. As Rufres, it is our duty to consume the Vuul, brightening this world and the waking world both! |
Lloyd | Your duty is to consume the Vuul...? Because it looked more like you were running in fear from them... |
Terun | W-Well, the Vuul did not use to be corporeal beings. It's only recently that they've taken such scary forms! We've been relying on dreamcatchers to deal with the corporeal Vuul. |
Flynn | Dreamcatchers? |
Terun | Y-Yes... They're Rufress who have studied and trained for a long time, and grown big and strong. |
Natalia | You mean... adults? |
Terun | Y-Yes! Quite like human adults! But... Suddenly, they all disappeared. And the only ones left were us younglings. And then the Vuul started appearing closer to the village, and... Well... we performed a ritual to awaken some dreamers to help us... |
Flynn | Ah. So that's what you meant by "awakened dreamers." |
Lloyd | So even though we're inside of a dream, somehow we're awake? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. |
Terun | Well, this isn't just your dream, Mr. Lloyd. It's a dream shared by lots of people from lots of worlds! It's called an, ummm... A "collective unconsciousness." Or at least, that's what a dreamcatcher told me. |
Natalia | I think I'm beginning to understand. What's important is that we've been summoned to help Terun and his people. |
Asbel | But then why don't we have any memories? I think we'd be a lot more helpful with our full capabilities... |
Terun | I... I don't understand that myself... Maybe the Vuul did something when you were crossing the wall of sleep... You were actually supposed to awaken right here in the village. But we couldn't figure out where you were, so we had to send someone to find you... And that... was me. Only the strongest willed of people are able to awaken like this. We were hoping that strength would save us. But the Vuul are getting stronger, and you lost your memories... I'm so sorry that we pulled you into this. We didn't know what else to do! |
Asbel | Don't worry. Now that I know you need help, I won't be leaving until you're safe. |
Natalia | Nor will I. |
Flynn | I will do all that I can to aid you. |
Terun | Th-Thank you...! |
Lloyd | I'm in too! It's just a dream, right? How hard could it be? |
Terun | No, it... It doesn't work like that. Revalia is a dream world, yes, but... You're a part of it now. |
Natalia | What do you mean by that? |
Terun | I mean, if a dreamer awakens here, and then dies, he won't ever wake up again in the waking world. At least, that's what our teachings say... |
Lloyd | Whoa. Seriously? |
Flynn | Then we'll need to be just as careful as we are in the waking world. Everyone, fight defensively! |

Lloyd | So what do we do next? |
Asbel | Now that we understand the situation, we need to figure out what's behind the increase in the Vuul population. |
Flynn | Before we do that, we need to secure this village. |
Natalia | Eradicating all the nearby Vuul seems to be the only way to guarantee their safety. |
Terun | Um... excuse me... You can't just kill them all like that! |
Lloyd | Why not? |
Terun | Destroying their bodies just forces them to get a new one. You have to purify them to get rid of them for good. |
Natalia | Ah, and that's what you Rufres do. So that means... |
Flynn | We'll need a Rufres to join us. |
Terun | Umm... Yeah... So... you guys are just gonna be around the village? You're not going any farther than that? |
Flynn | That's right. Just the area outside of the village. |
Terun | Then... Then I guess I'll go with you. |
Lloyd | Thanks, Terun. Then we ought to get started! |

Lloyd | All right! Nice work, Terun. |
Terun | Th-Thank you! |
Asbel | Wait, there's still one left! Get behind me, Terun! |
Terun | Bwaaah! |
Lloyd | Damn, this one's tough! |
Flynn | Our swords are just bouncing off of it! |
Natalia | It has to have a weak point somewhere... |
Rubia | Fireball! |
Natalia | A magical arte?! And a powerful one at that... |
Flynn | Thank you, whoever you are. |
Rubia | That kind's real weak to fire artes! But I need you guys to protect me while I'm casting them! |
Lloyd | You got it! I'll keep it busy for you! |
Rubia | All right, we did it! |
Flynn | Thank you for your help. Now, if you don't mind— |
Rubia | I'm Rubia! And I sure am glad to have finally found some other people! |
Asbel | ...And that's why we're out trying to eradicate all the Vuul in the area. |
Rubia | A world of dreams... So that's why I can't remember anything. I have this feeling that I had a partner that I somehow got separated from. I've been looking everywhere... |
Lloyd | And instead you found us. |
Rubia | Yeah... I don't think the person I've been looking for is one of you... |
Asbel | Then why not join us? |
Rubia | Huh? |
Natalia | The person you seek might still be out there. They just awoke somewhere else. |
Flynn | I think it's likely that there's more of us "awakened dreamers" out there If we stay together, we may find them. |
Lloyd | And we'd make for a stronger team with your fire artes at our disposal! |
Rubia | Yeah, okay... Thanks! Let's all work together! |

Lloyd | All right, just one more on top here, and... Yep. Looking good! One defensive barricade a la Lloyd, ready for service! |
Flynn | The Vuul won't be able to get into the village so easily now. |
Terun | Thank you so much, Lloyd. |
Asbel | That's nice work, Lloyd. You must have done this before! |
Lloyd | Ah, I just enjoy building things. Anyway, what's the plan now? |
Asbel | Well, the Vuul population has increased so much that it's hard to imagine we could possibly eradicate them all. |
Natalia | Right. So we need to find the source of the increase. Terun, do you Rufres have any theories? |
Terun | I... I'm sorry. No one knows anything! If there were still any dreamcatchers around, they might... |
Rubia | Where did all the dreamcatchers go? |
Terun | No one knows! The last time anyone saw them, they were heading towards the mountains west of here. |
Asbel | West, huh? Well, that sounds like the obvious place to start. |
Natalia | Right. We're not going to learn anything more by hanging around here. We need to get proactive. |
Terun | Um... Excuse me... |
Lloyd | Yeah, and that should give us a chance to find any other awakened dreamers that could be out there. |
Terun | Listen! You can't go that far from the village! Without Rufres to keep them in check, the Vuul there are too strong! The Vuul in that area are dangerous even when they don't have bodies! Even for awakened dreamers! |
Lloyd | But you Rufres can purify the ones without physical forms, right? So what if you came with us? |
Terun | N-No! I mean, yes, you're right, but... There aren't any Rufres here who would dare go into Vuul territory like that! That's w-w-way too scary! |
Rubia | You pulled us into this world and now you won't even help us? |
Natalia | We'll just have to find another way. The Rufres clearly haven't the strength for that kind of combat. |
Lloyd | And despite that, Terun bravely came with us when we were clearing out the area around the vilage. |
Rubia | So he just gets to stay home by saying he's "scared"? I mean, I'm scared, too... Hey, I gotta ask—how are we supposed to get back to our own world, anyway? Will we wake up if we beat the Vuul? |
Terun | I think that... Maybe if we reversed the ritual, you'd all wake up in your own worlds? If we got everyone in the village together, they could do it... Do you want me to...? |
Flynn | No. Not yet. |
Terun | No? |
Flynn | You said that our worlds and Revalia are influencing each other, right? So we can't go back yet. |
Asbel | Flynn is right. We can't abandon this world—not only for its sake, but for the sake of our own world as well. And besides, I never ignore someone in need. Even in a dream! |
Terun | You... You mean... |
Lloyd | Yeah, we can't leave things like this. And you know, I got a feeling I used to fight like this for people all the time. |
Rubia | Fine, fine. Well I'm not gonna be the one jerk who wants to go home! I'm in! I'm doing this! |
Natalia | Admirable words from you all. And of course, I'd be happy to lend my bow, if you'd have it. |
Terun | ... I... I guess... |
Lloyd | The problem is, how are we gonna get around outside of the city? |
Terun | I'll do it! |
Lloyd | Huh? |
Terun | I-I-I-I'll c-c-come w-w-w-with you! Let's g-go! |
Flynn | You will? We appreciate the offer, but we'll be going quite a ways outside of your village. Don't push yourse— |
Terun | I said I'll do it! I can't just wait in the village while you all risk your lives for us. I won’t let it happen! |
Asbel | Are you sure about this? |
Terun | I'm scared, bu-bu-but... I've made up my mind! |
Asbel | All right. Then welcome to the team! We'll make sure to keep you safe. |
Terun | Th-Thanks! |
Flynn | I admire the courage you've shown today, Terun. |
Lloyd | Well, there's nothing left to discuss. Let's get on with it! |

Lloyd | So the dreamcatchers were headed this way the last time you saw them? |
Terun | Y-Yes... |
Asbel | Something on your mind, Flynn? I see your eyes darting about... |
Flynn | I'm trying to keep an eye out for other awakened dreamers. And beyond that, there's a real feeling of dread around here... |
Asbel | Yeah, I feel it too. This area looks natural and peaceful, but... |
Lloyd | It's almost the opposite of where we awakened. That was dark and gloomy, but it didn't have this ominous vibe. |
Terun | It's because we're near Vuul territory. St-St-Stay close to me, okay? |
Rubia | So how exactly do you purify these Vuul things, anyway? |
Terun | How...? I mean, if it's a weak Vuul with no body, I just suck it in and... it's gone. |
Rubia | So you just like, inhale them? That's incredible! |
Terun | Heh. Yeah, I guess so. If I really concentrate, I can even inhale the stronger ones. But I could never fight with the ones that have bodies, the way you can! |
Natalia | Well, you leave that to us, Terun. You're doing more than enough. |
Asbel | So I guess the reason the Vuul were targeting you earlier was because you Rufres are their natural enemies? |
Flynn | Perhaps they can tell that Terun isn't just another Rufres? That he possesses unusual strength and will. |
Terun | I-I don't possess any of those things! I'm the youngest Rufres in the village! I don't have any strength at all... B-But... Thank you for saying that. I bet Nahato would be happy to hear it. |
Lloyd | Who's Nahato? |
Terun | He's my upbringer. Like the Vuul, we Rufres are born alone, without parents. But when a new Rufres is born, a senior Rufres is chosen to look after it. That's an upbringer. Nahato is the smartest of all the dreamcatchers, and is real strong too! He gets scary when he's mad, though. He's taught me a lot. I want to be a dreamcatcher like him when I'm bigger! |
Natalia | It sounds like you respect him a lot. That's quite admirable. |
Terun | S-Sorry... I didn't mean to go on and on like that. |
Lloyd | Nothing wrong with that! It can be a hard thing to admit that you wanna be like your dad. |
Natalia | It sounds wonderful and fascinating. Upbringers are like a father, brother, and master, and yet not any of those... |
Lloyd | Sounds like someone who'd be pretty important to you. |
Asbel | The memory's gone, but I have a feeling there was someone like that in my life. Someone who made me stronger... |
Rubia | Me too. It drives me crazy not being able to remember! |
